By: Paige Seavey
Domestic violence awareness month is here.
Originally called The Day of Unity, created in October of 1981, it was only a week in October. Created with the intent to connect advocates across nations that were working to stop violence against women and children. It soon became a whole month in October of 1987, and since then October has been devoted to celebrating those who have survived domestic violence, those who have died because of it and those who are working to end it.
Within the Lasell community this month is recognized and also celebrated. On Tuesday October 18th there will be an domestic violence event being held in Yamawaki auditorium at 12:30p.m. The event will open with remarks from Newton Mayor Setti Warren and there will be a panel of community advocates and domestic violence professional speaking about this issue. In addition, survivor, Becca Davies, will be speaking about her experiences and how she survived. Come learn and support this issue.
