The Lasell College Rugby Club plays against other colleges and universities in New England and strives to be a source of pride and fun for the Lasell community. Starting in 2008 by Lasell students, Mike Costello and Ryan “the Rez” Rezendes the team has accumulated about 30 members.
Lasell Rugby has made big strides to become a top tier team in their Conference, Southern New England. Lasell beat Framingham State to solidify their undefeated record and win the division which sent them to the playoffs with momentum. They won the game in a nail biting 24-17 victory.
The first playoff game was against Champlain College. Lasell had the advantage being on home turf. There was a huge crowd there to support the Lasers. They won the game, bulldozing the competition in a 48-8 victory.
The second playoff game was the Semifinals vs. Westfield State. Sadly this ended their impressive run. They lost 22-5. Alex “Russia” Steblovskiy had this to say about the heartbreaking end to their great run. “It was tough coming this close and losing in the semi finals.” Alex along with the rest of the club dedicated this season to their dear friend Jimmy Curtis who tragically lost his life just weeks before fall semester. Alex had this to say; “I am sure Jimmy is proud of where we ended up and how far we made it. The whole team misses him more every day.”
Lasell College Rugby had a great run this year but plans on doing even better next year and has strong hopes to win it all.
