18 Grammys & GrowingPosted: February 13, 2012

What’s an award show without Kanye West there to cause a scene? Well, we found out at the 54th annual Grammy Awards that it can be quite boring. West failed to show up to claim his awards at the biggest night in music. Even though he didn’t show up, wherever he was, he was smiling. West won four awards for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Collabaration, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance. This takes his total number of Grammys to an astonishing 18.
Mr.West appears to be joining the elite ranks of historic musicians. He has now surpassed greats such as Beyonce, Ray Charles, and Michael Jackson in the amount of Grammys won. He is now 9th on the list of the most Grammys won by a musician.
This a huge achievement for the Hip Hop movement. Many have criticized the Grammy nomination board of over-looking rappers and not giving them enough credit. Kanye’s mentor, and well known rapper, Jay-Z, 42, stated in an interview by the Huffinton Post that, “rappers deserve more attention from the Grammy committee and from the whole world, if it’s got a gun everybody knows about it; but if we go on a world tour, no one knows”
Unfortunately, this is still a growing trend in the music industry. Many seem to see Hip Hop as a sub-genre of music not worthy of critical acclaim or recognition. It’s funny to hear people still talking like this, especially since Mr.West’s last album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy received near perfect reviews from everyone including Rolling Stone and Pitchfork Media. Popular critic website, Metacritic takes every review of movies and albums and averages the total scores all together and puts it in a number from 1-100. On Metacritic West’s album is ranked a 94 out of 100 which means it has “universal acclaim.”
West seems like he is on an unstoppable streak of success. Only 34, and in the prime of his career, who knows how many more Grammys he will win. He is currently working on his next solo album and collaborating with his record label G.O.O.D music to make an album. With four of his five albums being Grammy winners, it seems quite likely that West will add to his Grammy collection next year.
