This Saturday, February 11, the Lasell women’s and men’s basketball teams will host Albertus Magnus. The proceeds from both these games will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and to promote cancer awareness.
The teams, along with the rest of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), will participate in the Play 4Kay initiative from February 10 through the 20. The 14 schools associated with the Division III conference come from Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
The women’s teams will wear pink warm-up shirts before their 1 p.m. game in order to raise awareness. The men’s team will follow at 3 p.m.
The Kay Yow Cancer Foundation was is named after longtime long time North Carolina State University women’s basketball coach Sandra “Kay” Yow. Since it establishment in 2007, it’s goal has been to aid and find a cure in the fight against various cancers affecting women today. It does this through raising money for scientific research, providing financial assistance for those who need it, and creating public awareness of these impact cancers.
Up to her passing in 2009, Yow worked in conjunction with other charities and companies such as Nike, the V Foundation, GlaxoSmithKline, and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. For more information regarding the Kay Yow Cancer Fund or ways you can get involved, visit the foundation’s website.
When asked about attending the game, senior , 22, Mikhail Krevosky said, “I was planning on attending the game regardless, but its great that students and other people become aware and have the chance to get involved with this charity.”He added that, “I’m glad that Lasell is donating the proceeds from the game to the foundation.”
