Barney Frank to Speak at Commencement

By Anthony Liberatore

For students planning to graduate this coming Spring, such as myself, the time is almost here!  The Lasell College Class of 2012 Undergraduate Commencement ceremony will surely be an exciting event, as Congressman Barney Frank is expected to deliver the class’s commencement speech.  Congressman Frank is known as an outspoken advocate for civil rights and happens to be a very engaging speaker.

Beyond being a Congressman, Representative Frank is also the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee.  During his time spent on the committee, Representative Frank helped to pass the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.  This act was put in place, among many other reasons, to protect consumers when buying financial products.  It has also been regarded as “the most sweeping overhaul of the nation’s financial regulatory system since the Great Depression” by the news provider, Politico.

Along with reforming Wall Street, Representative Frank is also known for his work in the passing of the Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act, and the Freedom of Choice Act of 1993.

Beyond politics, Representative Frank has greatly helped struggling New Bedford fishermen, get the financial compensation they deserve and he’s helped in the expansion of the MBTA and their commuter rail system.

Most recently, Congressman Frank has announced that he will not be running for re-election to Congress after 16 terms of service.

Due to his great list of accomplishments, Congressman Frank should have quite a bit to talk about during the upcoming graduation festivities.  He himself is a neighbor of the college, as he lives in Newton, MA, minutes away from campus.

The Lasell College Class of 2012 Commencement ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 13 at 11:00 am.  All students are expected to arrive early on the day of commencement and meet in the main lobby of the Wolfe Academic Building to prepare for the ceremony. More information about the event and other activities occurring during graduation weekend can be found here.
