On January 31, 2011, Zach Wahls addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public hearing regarding a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Iowa. The nineteen-year-old son of a same-sex couple, Wahls proudly proclaimed, “the sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.” Hours later, his speech was posted on YouTube, where it went viral, quickly receiving more than two million views. By the end of the week, everyone knew his name and wanted to hear more from the boy with two moms.”
Since the word spread about Wahls’ profound speech, many news article have been written about his story including Gay marriage defense on YouTube disrupts “boring” life – The Des Moines Register, The politics and morality of gay marriage – The Economist, Marry me, Zach Wahls – Feministing, Rhetoric and rationality – The Economist, Zach Wahls, Black Swan – Modeled Behavior, Zach Wahls Defends Gay Marriage To Iowa Legislators – The Huffington Post, and Son of Iowa Lesbians Fights Gay Marriage Ban – ABC News.
On February 17, 2012 Wahls’ appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show to share his story. Of course with DeGeneres being an openly gay woman is a big supporter of Wahls’ and gave him lots of praise. In the audience was Wahls’ biological mom Terry who has been with her partner for 16 years. DeGeneres is know for having the latest “in the news” people on her show and it is great to see a news worthy person on her show instead of just entertainers.
