34 Days to Marathon Monday

By Abbey Daniel-Green

Clear your schedule because time is ticking down to the mostly enjoyable Monday of the year. This year marks the 116th Boston Marathon, better known as Marathon Monday.  A day of fun, friends and of course who couldn’t forget the race. Or could you?  With a distance of 26 miles the Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon.

On April 16th, 2012, the marathon runners will gather at Hopkinton High School for the start of the race. The athletes run on a mapped route, starting in historic Hopkinton, continuing to route 135, through Ashland, Framingham, Natick and Wellesley, and then connecting to route 16 along Commonwealth Avenue, finally ending in downtown Boston.

Fun Facts about the marathon: this year the marathon is going green with less paper use, an environmentally friendly pre-race pasta dinner, composting and recycling. What could be better than a green marathon? A charitable green marathon. The Boston Marathon is just not a time to watch and cheer on the runners but it is a time to celebrate its altruism. This year is the 24th year runners raise funds for of the Boston Marathon Charities. Over this time, the charities program has raised $122 million for America SCORES,  Bay State Games, Franklin Park Coalition and G-ROW. It is no wonder why the Boston Marathon is known worldwide.

So do you think you are ready for the marathon to race through Laser Nation? If so, make sure you celebrate the marathon the traditional way by ordering your Marathon Monday t-shirts. For the all the seniors, this year there are going to be special t-shirts just for the class of 2012. The only other thing you need to do is anticipate how much fun watching the marathon will be. See you on Commonwealth.
