The Mega Millions jackpot has reached of $540 million. The jackpot is reported to be the highest in game history. The next drawing will be the Friday March 30th at 11:00 pm. The Mega Million mania has swept the nation, as people are flocking to convenience stores to play their lucky numbers, or buying numerous Quic Pics. The winner, if there is one can choose a payment plan for the jackpot, or choose a lump sum of $389 million. The thought of winning the jackpot have people dreaming of early retirements and becoming instant multi-millionaires overnight.

The rules of the game are simple. After picking your own, or receiving your automated numbers, a drawing is held and five numbers between 1 and 56 are drawn. One powerball number between 1 and 46 is also drawn. The jackpot is won by matching all five numbers and the powerball. The jackpot is not the only prize that is up for grabs. If you match the five regular numbers without the powerball a prize of $250,000 is won. Also, if you match four of the regular numbers with the powerball the prize is $10,000. The other possible prizes are $150, $10, $7, $3, and even $2. The overall chance of winning a prize is 1 in 40. The chance of winning the jackpot is 1 in 175, 711, 536. It is been said that you have a better chance of being struck by lightning, than winning the jackpot.

Ticket buyers have tried to come up with own theories and superstitions for winning the jackpot. Winning the jackpot, has also had dire consequences. Stories of being “cursed” by the lottery have surfaced. Stories of jackpot winners having complications of becoming a millionaire and not knowing how to handle the money and dealing with friends and family members looking for a chunk of the winnings.

Two things are for sure, with the deadline for buying tickets ending at 8 p.m. tonight, the jackpot will only increrase, and whoever wins could possibly be the luckiest person in history.
