School after college?

By Justyn Loguidice

Continuing with the theme of the “real world”, another question comes into mind. This time I am talking about graduate school. Graduate school was something that to previous generations was assuredly there only to serve the very best and brightest. In today’s society this isn’t the case.

It seems as if the world is growing more and more difficult, and in order to combat these difficulties, more education is becoming the norm. In a culture where the Bachelors degree is the new high school diploma, the need for a graduate degree (MBA, PhD etc.) is becoming more and more necessary.

Now it may seem easy to say, “Okay, I’ll go to graduate school”, but this is not an easy step. There are many variables that need to be accounted for when making this decision. One of the major issues involving graduate school is money. For most American college students the word debt is synonymous with their immediate years after graduation. Graduate school therefore will enhance this debt and in some cases bring it to exorbitant levels. So where is the payoff? According to this article, a graduate student’s earning potential is magnified greatly with an MBA and a great return can be seem after putting in some experiences.

Another variable you have to take a look at doesn’t deal with numbers, but it’s crucial, and that is personal wants and desires. Many people are perfectly content with getting a college degree and calling it a day. Some are lucky enough to achieve that dream job with one college degree and that is great as well. One thing to take from this is that graduate school is not an easy decision. You have to want it badly because classes and workloads that will be accrued during a graduate school program can really throw you for a loop.

Whether or not you feel up to the challenge, be sure to read up on the questions you may have of graduate school located in this article here. This will give you in depth perspective to what grad school is all about, and ultimately helping aid you in future decisions.

Shamrock Slam Thursday

By Will Henry

Lasell College on Thursday night it’s Shamrock Slam. This is an event hosted by Lasell College Radio (LCR) to help celebrate and bring in St. Patrick’s Day.

Last year, this event was held for the first time in Lasell College history as a test sample to see how the students would react to it. The event was a success as more than two hundred students took part, partying the night away. LCR is hoping to expand that by making this year’s event more exciting.

There is a prize to be given out to the top three students that are dressed the most in green colored garb, whether it be clothing or any other kind of accessories. They will be awarded home court Boston Celtic’s tickets for a game this season. That’s a far lucky the leprechaun leap from the measly, cheap, plastic toys that were awarded last year for the best outfits.

Another big addition to this year’s Shamrock Slam is the pizza from Domino’s. Brian Wardyga, faculty advisor, and Jay Gildea, radio station manager, got Domino’s as a station sponsor. How great of a deal is that?

Admittance to this event is free but you must present a student ID in order to enter, which sadly means no friends outside of campus are allowed. The doors for this event open at 9p.m. in the student center and the event runs until midnight. There will be no admittance after 11p.m. so if you are planning to attend show up before early to get in.

The Rebound of A Hustler

By Ryan Scerra

Jay Jenkins, 34, is currently prepping for his 25-city American escapade, The Hustlers Ambition Tour.

Jenkins has been criticized for his work ethic after his long awaited album, TM103: Hustlers Ambition, had been delayed 13 times in a four year span. Fortunately, Jenkins’ delays paid off with his fourth solo album reaching number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts. This marks his fourth release as well as his fourth number one hip hop album.

His singles “I Do” and “Supafreak” have been dominating radio waves. His third single “Leave You Alone”, featuring Ne-Yo, is slowly climbing up the charts as well.

Now with all this success, after four years of musical hiatus, Jenkins is about to embark on his next tour. He will travel across America through 25 cities, including Boston, Seattle and Las Vegas. A picture of the tour dates leaked online which instantly caused a stir among hip hop fans.

On top of all this current success, Jenkins is working on more projects, one of which is with legend producer/rapper Warren G. Hip hop news website HipHopDX interviewed Jenkins, “It’s just that whole era,” Jenkins noted.

“That’s what I grew up on. To work with those cats [like DJ Quik or Warren G), they really make music. When you sit down and listen to them tell you stories about things that happened with [Tupac] and the whole Death Row thing, it’s just inspiration. It makes you want to go harder.”

TM103 has now sold over 500,000 units and with this tour about to kick off, sales are bound to increase. Jenkins also just recently performed his hit song “Leave You Alone” on Jimmy Fallon Live. Many doubted Jenkins’ rebound to the hip hop game, but it’s clear he is making a statement to those who doubted him.

Tickets for the tour shows are ranging from $20 to $200 for meet and greet packages on ticketmaster. His two singles can be heard below and all over your local radio stations.

Lasell basketball to the conference semifinals

By Stephen Brennan

As the clock winded down on Tuesday night, you could see the emotion go from cheek to cheek on the Lasell Basketball players as they realized they had just won their first conference tournament game as a collective group. Lasell College defeated Emmanuel College 80-73 at home. After the game was tied at 40 a piece at halftime, Lasell took the little control that they could in the second half and fought their way to a much deserved victory. With this win, the Lasell men move onto to the semifinals conference tournament game against #1 seed and the #23 team in the nation Albertus Magnus College.

In the biggest game of the season, Lasell got the most out of their players that they could. Javon Williams was the leading scorer with 25 points, but he got a lot of help especially from sophomore bench star Ernest McNeil who had 11 points and 12 rebounds, his first double double of the season. Although Javon was without a doubt the leading scorer it was a team effort. They could not have won the game without every ounce of help they got from every player that stepped on to the court that night. This was a much needed win for the team and the program. The team leap frogged from 10th to 4th position in the conference standings.

The Lasell fan base came out in bunches Tuesday night tosupport of their home basketball team as well, and the crowd had a huge effect on the game. When there was a run, the crowd would get wild and it would rattle Emmanuel College. The next time Lasell plays is Thursday night. The team goes in with nothing to lose and everything to win, and they will without a doubt play their hearts out in order to advance to the conference championship game.

Oscar wrap-up

By Alyssa Lajoie

On Sunday, February 26, Billy Crystal hosted the 84th Academy Awards.  Every year the ABC Television Network holds “Oscar Sunday” starting with coverage from “Good Morning America” live on the red carpet outside the Hollywood & Highland Center.

Continuing on through the day with “On the Red Carpet,” “On the Red Carpet at the Oscars,” “Oscars Red Carpet Live,” and finally leading up to the award show.

Some of the many nominations for the show consist of George Clooney and Brad Pitt for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in boots for Best Animated Feature Film, The Adventures of Tintin and Hugo for Best Music (Original Score.)

Viewers look forward to a great awards show filled with beautiful celebrities dressed in the greatest designer clothes, and watching great actors and actresses, films and more win the best award that Hollywood can give.

Afterward the “Jimmy Kimmel Live: After the Academy Awards” show has become an unexpected post-Oscar show, where guests will join Kimmel after they’ve attended the awards event. This year, the show was less exciting as in previous years because many critics already knew who would end up winning. Although there were many movies released in 2011, not all of them qere Oscar-worthy, so even the winners weren’t surprised either.

All you need to know is that The Artist, a black-and-white silent film, won for best movie. Yes, you read that right. The rest of the winners can be found here.

Snapback to the Future

By Zachary Gray

It seems that every decade there is a trend in fashion that stands out. The 80’s featured leg warmers and shoulder pads; Air-Jordans and flannels highlighted the 90s, and the 2000s popularized Sperry Top-Siders and yoga pants. But the end of the decade and the start of the 2010s seems to be taking a trip to the past. As fitted baseball caps remain popular in men’s head-ware, snapbacks have been making a comeback.

Snapbacks are on the rise again

The term snapback comes from the adjustable strap on the back of the hat. Made from a durable plastic, the strap features buttons which “snap” into place. Snapbacks are typically made of cotton or wool, feature vibrant colors and large designs. The brim of the hat is almost always flat.

For years, snapbacks were used in various sports, especially for the NBA Draft. A newly drafted player would be given the team’s snapback to wear before shaking hands with the commissioner. Below is an example from the 1996 NBA draft, as Allen Iverson is drafted #1 overall (Iverson receives his hat at 0:53).

During the early 90’s, West Coast rap was popularizing snapbacks, especially Oakland Raiders hats. Snapbacks would gain popularity throughout different age groups, areas, and other demographics. Towards the end of the decade, fitted hats took over.

Snapsbacks have made a comeback, though. Whether it’s the classic style, the vibrant colors, or simply the fit, it’s unsure why snapbacks are at such high demand again. Hat stores such as Lids and HatWorld sell New Era and Mitchell & Ness snapbacks for $30 dollars. Vintage snapbacks can be found online, with prices ranging from $20-$70 dollars. Even when the trend seemed to have gone out of style, snapbacks are proving to be timeless.

Freshmen Days

By Shay Sweet

Whether you are an incoming freshman or a transfer student, going away to school for the first time can be an eye widening experience for anyone.  As this semester comes to an end, several Lasell students will finish their first year of college and even more students will receive their college acceptances. Meeting new people, getting your academic schedule just right and balancing your relationships from home can seem like daunting tasks of higher education. But, with these tips and the right attitude, your transition into the “adult” world should become more manageable and even fun.

One of the biggest fears for an individual going away to school is that they won’t make friends as easily as they did in their secondary school years.  That fear can cause students to become introverted in an atmosphere where they are not completely comfortable.  College is a time of self-discovery and the best piece of advice that can be given to those unsure of themselves is to sign up, sign up, sign up.

There are sports, drama, music, art and basically any club you can imagine available. With some schools, such as Lasell, even letting you create your own organizations if they do not already exist.  Joining in on extracurricular activities is a great way to meet students who share the same passions as yourself.  Students who stay active in their schools community are proven to lead more productive lives academically as well.

As far as creating a challenging and engaging schedule, meeting with your advisor is always the first step and are individuals that are there to guide you throughout college career.  They can present you with each option available as well as give you their insight to the curriculum since they are the most familiar with the school itself.  Along with your advisors being openly available to you would be your actual professors.  Those teaching you the material can be thought of as one of your biggest assets and for the most part are more than willing to answer any questions you may have.

Another tip would be to attend all orientations provided in the beginning of the semester by the school.  This will help you become more familiar with the campus, giving you one less added stress on your first day of classes.  Once you become more comfortable with your surroundings, the next thing you should do is find an ideal place to study where you know you can completely focus.  Nothing is more difficult than trying to prepare for an exam when your roommate is continuously chatting on their phone or blasting their tunes.

When you are living away from your family and friends, one of the largest struggles can be balancing your personal life with your college life.  Missing your parents, making new friends without neglecting your familiar ones and many times managing long distance relationships are examples of the common problems that arise.  The one thing you always need to remember is communication.  Never forget the people who were there for you from the beginning but keep in mind that life is constantly changing, as well as yourself and you may find yourself going in different directions.  Make sure those closest to you are made a priority by telephone, writing letters or by using any of today’s technologies to keep in touch. Realize that long distance relationships in college can work out if both individuals are dedicated, but if it fails life will go on.  Assign a designated day every week to reach out to those important, no matter how busy your schedule may be and take trips to visit one another every month.

Many students find themselves unprepared upon arrival at school and not knowing what to expect, inevitably affecting the overall experience gained.  Every person’s time at college is unique but with the right advice it can be realized that its more than taking courses to earn a degree but it’s an opportunity to learn about who you are and where you are going in life, while making some memories along the way.

Zach Wahls to speak at Lasell

By Cherai Mills

On January 31, 2011, Zach Wahls addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public hearing regarding a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Iowa. The nineteen-year-old son of a same-sex couple, Wahls proudly proclaimed, “the sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character.” Hours later, his speech was posted on YouTube, where it went viral, quickly receiving more than two million views. By the end of the week, everyone knew his name and wanted to hear more from the boy with two moms.”

Since the word spread about Wahls’ profound speech, many news article have been written about his story including Gay marriage defense on YouTube disrupts “boring” lifeThe Des Moines Register, The politics and morality of gay marriageThe Economist, Marry me, Zach WahlsFeministing, Rhetoric and rationalityThe Economist, Zach Wahls, Black SwanModeled Behavior, Zach Wahls Defends Gay Marriage To Iowa LegislatorsThe Huffington Post, and Son of Iowa Lesbians Fights Gay Marriage BanABC News.

On February 17, 2012 Wahls’ appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show to share his story. Of course with DeGeneres being an openly gay woman is a big supporter of Wahls’ and gave him lots of praise. In the audience was Wahls’ biological mom Terry who has been with her partner for 16 years. DeGeneres is know for having the latest “in the news” people on her show and it is great to see a news worthy person on her show instead of just entertainers. To see Wahls’ appearance on the show click here.

On Tuesday, March 6, 2012 Zach Wahls will come to Lasell College to talk and inspire the Lasell community. This event is co sponsored by the Campus Activities board and Pride and will happen from 12:30-1:30 in Rosen. With Wahls’ speech still fresh in our minds, both campus groups are hoping to attract many students and faculty.

“Totes Amazeballs” The Tweet that created a cereal

By Abbey Daniel-Green

One day in the twitter-sphere, The Charlatans UK frontman, Tim Burgess, tweeted jokingly that he wanted to make a cereal called “Totes Amazeballs.” The tweet made it seem as though he was tweeting at Kellogg’s. Well, the joke is now turning into a reality.

Soon after Burgess tweeted about his comedic cereal, Kellogg’s approached the UK rocker about his idea; they wanted to make “Totes Amazeballs”. In a conversation between Burgess and NME.com he said, “They [Kellogg’s] picked up what I’d said. It was just something that was funny and it just kept moving.”

Kellogg’s in collaboration with Burgess have created “Totes Amazeballs” breakfast cereal.

Burgess came up with the idea for the cereal because, “People have started to use that expression [totes amazeballs] and it kind of gets up people’s noses, but it sounded to me like something Willy Wonka would come up with.” In case you are wondering about the expression “totes amazeballs,” it stands as an abbreviated and cooler, funnier way to say something is “totally amazing.” So we can understand that saying “totes amazeballs” is a pretty awesome way of being amazed by something, but the real question is will the cereal really be totes amazeballs?

According to Burgess “Totes Amazeballs” will taste like ‘Rocky Road’ ice cream, but a cereal, with the nutrition inside to get your body going. Currently Kellogg’s has the cereal in production but is going over ideas to create a wide launch. Due to Burgess’s rocker status, the cereal will first start off in the festival scene and will be offered as a hangover cure. If the cereal sounds good now, it gets even better because every box of “Totes Amazeballs” comes with a Tim Peaks mini-comic book inside the box.

If you are looking forward to getting your hands on “Totes Amazeballs” the cereal will be officially launched at Kendal Calling festival in the UK this summer. At the festival the “Tim Peaks” diner will serve it and all the proceeds from Burgess cereal diner sales will be donated to The David Lynch Foundation.

Rock music, charity, and “Totes Amazeballs.” To think this whole idea came to life because of a single totes amazeballs tweet.

Congressman Frank- Commencement Speaker

By Molly Clarke

Earlier this week Lasell College President, Michael Alexander, sent a campus-wide email to announce that Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank will be delivering this year’s Commencement Address as part of the 2012 graduation ceremony.

Frank, most recognized for his work advocating for civil rights and issues of equality, is known for his intelligence and unique sense of humor. A 2010 survey of Capitol Hill employees, later published in the Washingtonian, named Frank the “braniest” and “funniest” member of the House. Frank is also recognized as being the first ever, openly gay congressman.

Born in New Jersey to the owner of a truck stop and a legal secretary, Frank graduated from Bayone High School in 1957. He went on to attend Harvard University and, eventually, Harvard Law School. Prior to being elected to the U.S House of Representatives, Frank served as an assistant to Boston Mayor Kevin White. He was then elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives where he served for eight years. In 1980 Frank was elected to the U.S House of Representatives.

On November 28, 2011, Congressman Frank announced that he would retire from his position at the end of his term in 2013.

In his email, President Alexander said that, “Representative Frank has been a long-time voice for the voiceless and has consistently brought issues of equality to the fore, making him ideally suited to speak at an institution like Lasell that shares those same values.” Alexander continued, “Known for his quick intelligence, acerbic wit, and thoughtful analysis of the most salient issues of the day, Frank is an entertaining speaker, and a neighbor of Lasell College and Lasell Village. His appearance at this year’s Commencement- during his last year in office- is fitting.”
